ILOILO CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office in Western Visayas region has temporarily suspended works at the Aganan flyover for the review of its design while it is set to open bid documents for the third-party consultant of the Ungka II flyover, both located in the municipality of Pavia, Iloilo province.

DPWH Regional Director Engr. Nerie Bueno on Tuesday said the Aganan flyover has no defects but the department is being proactive since the structure is situated on the same road line as the Ungka II flyover and it has the same type of soil as per the initial result of the boring test in the area.

The project stretching to about 700 meters with a total fund of over PHP800 million is around 70 percent complete, according to DPWH Assistant Regional Director, Engr. Al Fruto.

“So to be sure we returned the design to the central office where it originated for them to review. If they think there is nothing to change, then okay at least we did our part. At least we are just being cautious because of what had happened to Ungka. It (work) suspended as of the moment until such time the reviewed design will be given to us by the central office,” Bueno said.

She added that the central office has not given them the timetable for the completion of the review being done by a consultant.

Meanwhile, the regional office on Feb. 16 will open the bid documents for the procurement of the third-party consultant for the Ungka II flyover and expects to award the consultancy to the winning bidder by the end of this month.

“The task is for them to see the defects and what is their recommendations and interventions that we will do so at least we can use the structure,” Bueno said.

The PHP630-million Ungka II flyover remains closed to traffic and the widening of the two-lane road on both sides is ongoing.

“We are trying to look for ways on how we can really decongest because we cannot just open the flyover. So we might as well focus on other ways on how we can decongest the traffic in that area,” the regional director added.

The Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC) of the Regional Development Council (RDC) during its special meeting on Monday afternoon has passed a resolution addressed to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan to help fast-track the provision of resolutions for the awarding of the consultancy for the Ungka II flyover and the review of the design for the Aganan project.
