MANILA – Thousands of workers displaced by the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro will be given temporary jobs under the emergency employment program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

"Around 10,000 individuals will be expected as beneficiaries," Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said in a phone interview on Thursday.

The DOLE chief added that over PHP100 million has been earmarked for the cash-for-work program.

On the other hand, he said they expect to come up with the final list of beneficiaries soon.

"The profiling of affected individuals is almost complete, with the final list of beneficiaries to be submitted within this week," he added.

Laguesma said ambulant and market stall fish vendors and employees of beach resorts, will also be provided by the assistance.

"Clean-up activities (will be offered) principally so the oil spill can be addressed at the soonest time possible. This can be (offered) to both principal and secondary beneficiaries," said Laguesma.

Beneficiaries will be given work for minimum of 10 up to 30 days. They will also be provided with prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE).

The M/T Princess Empress sank off the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro last Feb. 28.

The incident resulted in the spillage of industrial oil, affecting residents and disrupting livelihood in the area. (PNA)
