LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways in Bicol (DPWH-5) has completed a new flood control project worth PHP54 million in Ragay, Camarines Sur.

In a statement on Wednesday, DPWH Regional Director Virgilio Eduarte said the structure will provide better protection to the population, particularly to the residents who are mostly farmers.

"The completed PHP54-million project primarily ensures the safety and protection of nearby communities' lives, properties and crops against flood water during heavy rains and typhoons," Eduarte said.

He added with the project, local farmers will benefit as it secures their agricultural fields mostly of coconuts and abaca.

"The structure serves as the first line of defense against overflowing of the river to protect both the residential areas and farmlands from the threat of flooding," he said.

Eduarte also said the project is expected to boost the local economy as the production of raw materials for crafts and the source of ingredients for local delicacies are secured.

"These crafts and delicacies create a distinct identity of the locality which can be promoted not only to local travelers but to foreign tourists wanting to visit the natural attractions in the province," he said. (PNA)
