MANILA – The success of more women in the wonderful world of sports in recent years should serve as an inspiration to all, regardless of age and stature.

This was stressed by three-time Quezon City Councilor and leading women sports advocate Mayen Juico during her appearance in the recent E. Rodriguez Jr. High School Alumni Sportsfest 2023 at the Barangay N.S. Amoranto covered court in Malaya St., Quezon City.

Juico, daughter of former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Philip Juico and sister of incumbent councilor Joseph Juico, encouraged more women to take advantage of opportunities being given to them that past generations never could have imagined.

She also urged alumni-participants in the month-long sportsfest to take the lead and encourage the youth to get involved in sports and stay away from drugs and other vices.

Volleyball stars Ivy Lacsina and C.J. Woo of five-time PSL champion F2 Logistics Cargo Movers and PBA coach Bonnie Tan of NorthPort Batang Pier also attended the hour-long opening ceremony “to spread some sports love.”

”Thank you E. Rodriguez Jr. High School Alumni Spors Club for inviting us. It is always a blessing to be able to inspire others and at the same time be inspired by them,” said Lacsina and Wo, who also gamely signed autogrpahs and posed for photos with new-found friends.

Also present during the ceremony were former ERJHS Alumni Association president Jess Asistin, Lt. Col Mike Gomez of the Manila Police District, Lina Torres of Batch 62, Roberto Castor Rover Scout head Fe Castor-Pangan and ERJHS head teacher Marbin Pelayo, who represented School Principal Gina Labor Obierna.

Barangay N.S. Amoranto chairman Ato de Guzman delivered the welcome remarks, while ERJHS Alumni Sports Club president Ed Andaya introduced the guest speakers.

Jean Wenceslao of Batch 89 was chosen as the Ms. ERJHS Alumni Sportsfest 2023. She received her award from ASC vice-president Imee Gines and Barangay Paang Bundok chairman Lawrence Tiglao.

Select ERJHS students under Dante Ballesteros provided the intermission number.

ASC adviser Zeny Castor declared the tournament open.

Ramon Ypil of Batch 84 and Jesse Nell of Batch 85 served as masters of ceremonies. (PR)
