ROME – Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday after undergoing an operation last week, the Vatican press office said Thursday.

"The health team that is following Pope Francis has confirmed the Holy Father's discharge from Policlinico A. Gemelli on the morning of tomorrow, Friday, June 16," said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.

On Wednesday, the Vatican press office said the pope's clinical course was proceeding regularly following his surgery to repair a hernia caused by a 2021 operation and that medical staff was "planning his discharge for the next few days".

Earlier on Thursday the Pope went to visit children on a pediatric oncology ward at the hospital. (ANSA)
