MANILA – The high-profile detainee nabbed last week while returning to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) facility after an unauthorized night out enjoys other perks from his guards in exchange for bribes, a justice official said Monday.

Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson Mico Clavano said thousands of pesos change hands in exchange for preferential treatment for Jad Dera, who is under detention at the NBI for a number of criminal cases, including his alleged involvement in the criminal cases of former senator Leila De Lima.

"As of right now, we are trying to check the landscape kung pwede natin ilipat si (if we can move) Jad Dera sa ibang (to another) detention facility," Clavano told reporters.

He said Dera should no longer stay at the NBI detention facility after what happened on June 21, when he dined out with contractual NBI employees and used a marked van.

Lahat po ito nalaman po natin na nababayaran po ng ating detainee na si Jad Dera (We learned that Jad Dera can pay off for all these)," Clavano said but did not mention a specific amount.

"Unacceptable na naman po ito (This is unacceptable). We would like to curtail this and stop this practice by moving him to another detention center."

Dera also made multiple trips to Tagaytay, Subic in Zambales province, and Calatagan, Batangas, the DOJ learned.

The DOJ is also verifying reports that Marvin Miranda, another detainee and co-accused in the murder of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, enjoys similar preferential treatment. (PNA)
