TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways has completed the PHP19.2 million shore protection project in the town of Mapanas, Northern Samar province.

The 217-meter seawall project installed along Mapanas Boulevard includes a half-kilometer coastal road and the installation of solar-powered streetlights, said Charlito Carlobos, officer-in-charge of the DPWH Northern Samar district engineering office in a phone interview Monday.

The project, funded under the 2022 regular budget of the DPWH, was designed to protect over 14,000 town residents from destructive waves of the Pacific Ocean, especially during storm surges.

“With the completion of this improvement project, the community will be protected from storm surges during natural calamities. The structure also provides easy access to resorts of Mapanas town,” Carlobos added.

Mapanas, a 5th-class town located 262 north of Tacloban City, is known for its white sand beaches, rock formation, and natural blue lagoon.

From this city, the town can be reached through a six-hour land travel. (PNA)
