SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The Paliwan River in the municipality of Bugasong is under close watch to ensure that no commuters will get stranded once it overflows again amid heavy rainfall caused by Super Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon.
The overflow has destroyed the embankment serving as a temporary access road for travelers crossing the river in Barangay Paliwan at noontime on Monday but was repaired and made passable to commuters later in the evening.
“People who were then traveling to the northern part of Antique passing by Paliwan were finally able to proceed to their destinations after the repair of the embankment,” Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Broderick Train said in an interview Tuesday.
The embankment is a temporary remedy after Typhoon Paeng cut off the concrete Paliwan Bridge in October last year.
It was also destroyed by Typhoon Betty only on May 31 this year.
The Antique District Engineering Office (DEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has stationed personnel in the area to do repair work when needed so as not to disrupt commuters.
The latest advisory released at 5 p.m. by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDDRRMC) said that the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Typhoon Egay, will continue to bring occasional to monsoon rains over the western portions of Visayas, Central Luzon and Southern Luzon in the next three days.
The weather disturbance will also bring gusty conditions over coastal and upland/mountainous areas exposed to winds, including Visayas in the next two days.
Train said that the fisherfolk are advised to seek shelter and not venture to the sea because of the big waves that could endanger their lives.
“The Coast Guard Station in Antique had issued a cancellation of trips of passenger vessels since Monday, which had not yet been lifted until today (July 24, 2023),” Train said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a gale warning affecting Antique on July 24.
Three vessels plying the Semirara, Caluya, and Libertad to Mindoro route canceled their trips starting Monday.
Meanwhile, Train said they assisted the Municipal DRRMO and the Bureau of Fire Protection in rescuing two stranded elderly after a flash flood in the Caranganan River in Barangay Manlakbo in Valderrama town on July 24.
They were on their way home from their farm in the same barangay when the flash flood occurred. (PNA)
