MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday said that it is now validating reports of five deaths in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Calabarzon supposedly due to the combined effects of Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon.

The number includes four from Cordillera and one from Calabarzon.

Initial reports said that four reported deaths in the CAR were due to landslides.

In the same update, the NDRRMC said that it is confirming reports of two injuries in Calabarzon and Western Visayas.

Also, the NDRRMC reported a total of 89,639 families which is equivalent to 328,356 persons residing in 836 barangays in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and CAR were affected by bad weather.

This is significantly higher than the 44,356 families reported on Wednesday.

Of this number, 5,950 families or 19,826 persons are now being aided in 306 evacuation centers while 1,862 families which is equivalent to 6,871 individuals are being helped outside.

The Office of Civil Defense earlier said that the affected families are a combination of those displaced and those not needing transfer or evacuation from their residences. It cited as an example families whose source of livelihood were affected but not needing evacuation.

Houses damaged were placed at 400 and these were reported in Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, BARMM and CAR.

Assistance so far extended to Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, BARMM and Cordillera amounted to PHP10.2 million. (PNA)
