Over 2.2M residents in C. Luzon affected by weather disturbances

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Over 2.2 million residents in Central Luzon were displaced by the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoons Egay and Falcon, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-3 (RDRRMC-3) said.

In its latest report released on Thursday, the RDRRMC-3 said 640,449 families or 2,246,464 individuals were displaced in the region following the continuous moderate to heavy rains brought about by the weather disturbances the past days.

The RDRRMC-3 also reported that 1,010 barangays in the region were hit by floods, forcing some 8,344 families or 29,466 individuals still stay in the various evacuation centers.

Egay’s wrath likewise destroyed 450 houses of which 85 were totally and 365 were partially damaged.

The estimated damage in fisheries and aquatic resources in the region was estimated at PHP1,042,406,061.

A total of PHP46.48 million worth of assistance were provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government units to the affected individuals and families.

Three road sections in the region, particularly in Pampanga are still not passable to motorists due to flooding.

These are the Baliwag-Candaba-Sta. Ana Road in Barangay San Agustin, Candaba; Candaba-San Miguel Road in Barangay Paralaya, also in Candaba; and the Apalit-Macabebe-Masantol Road in Barangay San Gabriel, Macabebe.

Meanwhile, portions of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) are still flooded due to the overflowing of the Pampanga River.

In its advisory as of 4 p.m. Thursday, the overflow caused a 63-centimeter deep flood at the southbound part of the expressway and a 45-centimeter deep flood at the northbound direction of the Tulaoc Bridge in San Simon, Pampanga.

Although all lanes are passable, the NLEX said that motorists can expect slow-moving traffic with a running speed of approximately 5 to 10 kilometers per hour.

The NLEX, in a statement, said their teams are installing sandbags to reduce flooding at the site. (PNA)
