CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Mayor Rolando Uy is considering the revision of an existing ordinance to include penalties for businesses that fail to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) on their premises.

In a statement Thursday, Uy said this was one of the discussions brought up with Councilor Romeo Calizo, a retired military general and chair of the committee on public safety Thursday.

“If possible, we revise the ordinance to include a provision of cancellation or non-renewal of business permits to establishments that fail to install CCTV security cameras,” he said.

The city has an existing city ordinance that requires business establishments to install CCTVs, but it lacks provisions mandating the cancellation or non-renewal of permits should business owners fail to comply.

The discussion on CCTVs resurfaced following Wednesday’s daytime robbery of a pawnshop here where armed assailants carted PHP9 million worth of jewelry items.

Uy directed Col. Salvador Radam, city police director, to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

"This means, we have to add more efforts to maintain the city's peace and order," Uy said.

'Higalaay' preparations

Meanwhile, Radam said the motive for the robbery that also wounded an employee of Gold Mega Jewelry Store along JR Borja Street showed “personal gain as the motive of the crime.”

As the city is set to roll out different events of the monthlong Higalaay Festival, Uy called on residents to embody the virtues of the city’s patron saint, St. Augustine, to sustain the city’s march to recovery and progress.

"May we as a people emulate and embody these virtues not only as we celebrate our annual fiesta but in the days ahead," he said. (With a report from Stephen Capillas/PNA)
