MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances behind the shooting incident at the Taguig City Police Station which resulted in the death of a police officer.

"Our resolve to uncover the truths remains undeterred, and we will explore every avenue to bring clarity to this isolated event. Our collective assurance is that justice will be diligently pursued and unequivocally served," PNP Public Information Office chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said in a press statement.

"We ardently appeal to the public for their understanding and patience as we navigate this situation. Rest assured, the PNP's pledge to transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of justice stands unshaken," he stressed.

Killed in Monday's incident that took place at the Taguig City Police Station's Community Affairs Section was Executive Master Sgt. Heriberto Saguiped while the gunman Chief Master Sgt. Al-Rakib Aguell and another police officer, Cpl. Alison Sindac, were injured.

Maranan also described the incident as depressing and extended its sympathies to the family of the victim.

"Considering this distressing circumstance, the PNP is committed to expediting the procedures associated with the processing of benefits and claims for the bereaved family members. We will ensure that all necessary financial and other forms of assistance are promptly provided to alleviate the burdens faced by the aggrieved parties," Maranan said in a statement.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the affected individuals and their families during this grievous time," he added.

Maranan said the initial investigations into the incident have led to a focus on the individual demeanor caused by underlying medical conditions that appear to have precipitated this unfortunate event.

However, he said the primary focus "rests squarely on providing immediate support" to the aggrieved family and the proper care of Sindac who is still recovering.

Maranan said the course of action concerning Aguell would be established subsequent to his medical discharge.

He said a murder case was filed against Aguell on Tuesday.

Call to strengthen discipline

Meanwhile, the Southern Police District (SPD), which has jurisdiction over the Taguig City Police Station, said the incident is an isolated case that serves as a reminder to strengthen programs on personal discipline and stress management among police officers.

"As of now, we believe there is no need to relieve the involved police officers from their duties. However, we assure the family and the public a thorough, impartial and swift investigation to ensure that all aspects of the incident are comprehensively addressed. Our utmost priority is to ensure a fair and transparent investigation that will uncover the truth and establish accountability," it said.

The SPD also thanked the cooperation of the witnesses to the incident.

"We assure the public that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future. The safety and security of the community remain our top priority. We also humbly ask the public to allow the investigation run its course and to not believe unverified reports about the incident," it added. (PNA)
