BUTUAN CITY – The local government unit (LGU) of the Agusan del Sur town of Prosperidad has welcomed the establishment of the regional dairy stock farm in their area, seen to boost the livestock and dairy industry in the province.

Marlita Cortez, chief of the Prosperidad municipal agriculture office, said technical personnel from the National Dairy Authority (NDA) conducted validation activities earlier this week at the 50-hectare dairy stock farm located in Barangay Magsaysay.

“This 50-hectare area once served as a livestock farm of the provincial government but was recently turned over to the Prosperidad LGU for management,” Cortez said in a phone interview Thursday.

NDA's assistance will include the rehabilitation of the barn house, the provision of 50 heads of dairy cattle and the establishment of a seven-kilometer farm-to-market road.

The farm will also engage in the dispersal of dairy cows to farmers who are interested in going into dairy farming, as well as training for dairy milk production, Cortez said.

“The development of the dairy farm will receive an allocation from the PHP250 million funding from the NDA and the Office of Sen. Cynthia Villar,” she said.

Cortez said the Prosperidad farm is among the four dairy farms in Mindanao that will get a slice of the funding.

Top officials from NDA are set to visit Prosperidad this month for the signing of the memorandum of agreement with Mayor Eric Mellana and the formal start of the project, she added.

Cortez said over 100 farmers have already expressed interest in switching from cattle livestock farming to dairy farming. (PNA)
