Pasig chess player bags 2 medals in Eastern Asia Youth tilt

MANILA – Pasig City chess player Danry Seth Romualdez bagged two medals in the 7th Eastern Asia Youth Championship which concluded Thursday night in Changjiang Chess Bay in Hainan, China.

Romualdez, a Grade 3 student at MGC New Life Christian Academy, won the blitz silver medal and standard bronze medal in the tournament organized by the Chinese Chess Association (CCA), under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and World Chess Federation (FIDE).

"I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen," said Romualdez, who is mentored by FIDE Master Christopher Castellano.

Romualdez and Chinese Moxuan Bai finished with identical 5.5 points, but the Filipino was awarded the silver medal after the tiebreak points were applied.

He defeated Mongolia's Tulga Lkhagvademchig (1st round), Tseesuren Tenuun (2nd round) and Amarsaikhan Amarkhuu (4th round), and China's Tianwen Chen (6th round) and Beichen Zhang (7th round). He split the point with Bai (3rd round).

Chinese Zhirui Zhang, who beat Romualdez in the fifth round, claimed the gold medal with 6.0 points.

Meanwhile, Romualdez settled for the bronze medal in standard competition where he scored 7.0 points on five wins and four draws.

Romualdez conquered Lkhagvademchig (1st round), Chinese Dilixiati Bilali (3rd round), Mongolian Munkhjargal Munkh-Orgil (5th round), Bai (6th round) and Chinese Beichen Zhang (8th round).

He split the points with Tenuun (2nd round) and Amarkhuu (9th round), and China's Tianwen Chen (4th round) and Zhirui Zhang (7th round).

Bai downed Malaysian Haqqi Mohd Hatta in the final round to claim the gold medal with 8.0 points, while Tenuun prevailed over Hong Kong's Lincoln Or to earn the silver medal with 7.5 points. (PNA)
