Army's Gomobos wins 2 more golds in PH ROTC Games

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Christine Gomobos displayed her awesome form to claim the women's 200 meters gold medal in the Philippine Army category of the 2023 Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Games Mindanao leg athletics competition at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex track and field stadium here on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Criminology student of the Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte province clocked 13.6 seconds.

Gomobos later collected her fourth gold medal in the 4x400m relay with Shara Jamisola, Rahima Jamil and Mary Joy Sumilhig with a time of four minutes and 50 seconds.

Tangub City Global College (5:04.8) bagged the silver medal while JH Cerilles State College (5:18.7) pocketed the bronze medal. "Confident, thankful and excited," said the Subanon, who was born and raised in Barangay Punta Blanca.

"My victory in the 200m yesterday has boosted my morale today. Thanks to my coach Hery Cervantes, my family and most of all, to God for the blessing. I am excited to compete in the national finals," said Gomobos, who won the 100m hurdles at the 2022 Mindanao Association for State and Tertiary Schools (MASTS) held in Mati, Davao Oriental.

In the men's division, Rico Meller Noro of Davao Oriental State University (DORSU) defeated Jerome Marc Dave Basin of Tangub City Global College in Misamis Occidental to pocket the gold medal in 11.8 seconds.

Basin, who ruled the 200m on Monday, bounced back in the 4x400m relay, winning the gold medal with Jericho Egbus, Karl Justine Napone and Wimar Peralta in 3:54.5s.

JRMSU's got the silver medal in 4:08.3 while the Philippine Christian Foundation took the bronze medal in 4:14.5.

"I am confident to win this race (100m)," said the 21-year-old Noro, an Industrial Technology Management sophomore. "I could have won the 200m, but I didn't, so I tried my very best today."

DORSU athletics coach Rey Rabuya praised Noro's performance, which he described as "very meaningful".

"There is excitement and joy in Noro's victory because this is the first ROTC Games and he's now part of the tournament's history," he said.

Meanwhile, John Barey Asdane of Northern Mindanao State University-Zamboanga City dominated the men's 100m in 12.3s to secure his second gold medal after winning the 200m in the Philippine Air Force category.

Barbie Joy Lamera of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College in General Santos City ruled the women's division 15.9 seconds.

In the Philippine Navy category, Silver Jude Ventoza of Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University won the men's division in 11.9s, while Shakira Tuahan topped the women's division in 18.1 seconds.

"I am happy to win my second gold medal. I am looking forward to my first trip to Manila for the national championships," said the 20-year-old Tuahan, a native of Barangay Tongbangkaw in Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi province. She is currently studying at the Marine Technology at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.

In women's volleyball, Davao De Oro State College (DDOSC) downed University of Mindanao-Davao City, 25, 17, 25-14, 25-22, in the Philippine Army category at the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic University Gym.

Other winners were Southern City Colleges over Sultan Kudarat State University, 25-11, 25-9, 25-12; Aurelio Mendoza Memorial College over MIST, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11; PCF over Zamboanga Del Sur Provincial Government College, 25-11, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15; JRMSU over ADSCAT, 25-10, 25-11, 25-8; and DSSC over JHCSC, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15.
