Families affected by 2 typhoons, 'habagat' soar to 106K

MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday said some 106,677 families have so far been affected by the effects of the southwest monsoon and Typhoons Goring and Hanna.

This is significantly higher than the 85,395 reported on Thursday, the NDRRMC said in its latest disaster bulletin.

The latest figure is equivalent to 387,242 persons in 1,382 barangays in Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Of this number, 5,152 families or 21,701 individuals are being sheltered inside 293 evacuation centers while another 6,092 families or 24,827 persons are being aided outside.

The Office of Civil Defense earlier said the affected families include those displaced and those not needing transfer or removal from their residence.

As of this time, the NDRRMC said it is validating the report of one death in Western Visayas.

Meanwhile, some 482 houses were reported damaged in Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas and Cordillera.

Damage to agriculture was estimated at PHP395.2 million in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Western Visayas.

Around 8,734 farmers and fisherfolk were affected by the bad weather.

 

Infrastructure damage

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways has estimated the amount of damage from Typhoon Goring and the southwest monsoon at around PHP380 million in three regions.

Secretary Manuel Bonoan, citing the report of the Bureau of Maintenance as of Friday noon, said the initial cost of damage to national roads, bridges, and flood-control structures has reached PHP379.58 million.

Of the amount, PHP143.28 million was the partial damage to roads, PHP13.44 million to bridges, and P222.85 million to flood control structures in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos region and Cagayan Valley. 

On the other hand, the DPWH also reported a total of 24 roads have been reopened by its Quick Response Teams.

The teams are also working on clearing a total of six road sections in the Cordillera and Ilocos Region that remain closed to traffic.

These are Abra-Ilocos Norte Road, San Gregorio, La Paz, Abra due to sinking pavement; Kennon Road, Camp One, Tuba, Benguet as precautionary measure; Claveria-Calanasan-Kabugao Road, sections in Barangay Namaltugan and Barangay Ninoy, Calanasan, Apayao due to road cut and collapsed pavement: Dantay Sagada Road, Brgy. Antadao, Sagada, Mt. Province due to road cut, collapsed pavement; Ilocos Norte -Apayao Road, K0523+ 150 - K0530+600 (Intermittent Sections) in Ilocos Norte due to landslides; and Roxas Bridge, Vigan-San Vicente Road in Ilocos Sur due to scoured bridge abutment.

Meanwhile, motorists are also advised to avoid two roads that are still one lane passable to only light vehicles in Ilocos Sur and Batangas, the Vigan Bridge 1 and 2 along Bantay-Vigan Road in Barangay 1, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, due to damaged abutment protection and bridge approach; and Nasugbu-Lian-Calatagan Road, Brgy. Putting Kahoy, Lian, Batangas, due to scoured shoulder and roadcut/collapsed pavement. (with Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
