MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – La Union province has recorded PHP387,136 in estimated damage to agriculture as of Sept. 6 due to weather disturbances that enhanced the southwest monsoon and brought heavy rains, according to the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
In a situational report on Wednesday, PDRRM officer Aureliano Rullado III said the affected agricultural products were mostly rice crops that were in reproductive, maturity, and vegetative stages.
A total of 12.97 hectares of rice fields in the towns of San Juan, Naguilian, and Sto. Tomas were affected based on the report of the local government units (LGUs).
Rulloda said 30 houses have been damaged due to a whirlwind that hit the province, particularly in Luna town during the onslaught of Typhoon Hanna.
Of the total number, five were totally damaged while 25 were partially destroyed. A 60-year-old woman was injured in the incident but was immediately treated.
The PDRRMO added that it is still checking with LGUs for other typhoons or "habagat"-related incidents in Tubao town where a 10-year-old boy went missing and has allegedly drowned, while a Philippine Coast Guard personnel drowned during the search and rescue operation.
Some 118 families or 410 individuals in 12 barangays were affected by floods and the whirlwind but have now returned to their homes or have stayed with their relatives.
“There were also reported landslides and soil erosion due to continuous rain in the towns of Aringay and Naguilian but these were secured and monitored while some are still being cleared, nonetheless, all roads are passable,” Rulloda said.
The provincial government and the LGUs have provided relief assistance to the affected families while the PDRRMO remains under blue alert. (PNA)
