ANKARA – Coco Gauff became the 2023 US Open women's singles champion by beating Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final Saturday.
Sabalenka won the first set, despite missing several critical break points early in the match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.
But afterward, the young American turned the tide and won the next two sets.
The 19-year-old clinched her maiden Grand Slam in her second major final, after losing the 2022 Roland Garros (French Open) final to Polish Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-3.
Sabalenka, who won the 2023 Australian Open and will be the world’s top-ranked tennis player Monday, missed a chance to win her second major of 2023. (Anadolu)
