DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office-Operation Center (CDRRMO-OPCEN) advised on Wednesday the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMCs) and partner clusters to closely monitor landslide-prone areas for possible aftershocks related to last week’s earthquake.

On Oct. 4, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolted Sarangani town in Davao Occidental which was also felt in this city at Intensity III.

In a report, CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran said no major incident took place in the city after the earthquake.

However, the office said 18 school buildings and three other infrastructures sustained minor cracks, while 13 individuals experienced dizziness and suffered difficulty in breathing.

“The reported damage in the school buildings was coordinated with the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) for the assessment of the structural integrity of the affected structures,” Baloran said.

Meanwhile, as part of the competency standardization and capability training of its first responders, the CDRRMO, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), launched its Oct. 9-13 certificate of competency (COC) training for CDRRMO-911 Fire Auxiliary Services (FAS) personnel.

Lyndon Ancajas, CDRRMO acting head of the administration and training division, said the ongoing training aims to strengthen, optimize, and standardize the skills, capacity, and knowledge of fire responders.

The training also intends to select personnel for the Urban Search and Rescue Unit (USAR) assigned under fire emergencies.

“Everyone who practices fire emergency response must have a certificate of competency. With that move, the BFP can see that fire responders who have a COC identification card had undergone the standard training,” he said.

Around 150 personnel from the FAS and USAR will be divided into three batches to undergo the training.

The second batch is slated to undergo training on Nov. 6-10 while the final batch on Dec. 11-15. (PNA)
