MANILA – A 33-year-old Malaysian national was arrested for attempting to bribe police officers in exchange for the release of his compatriot who was nabbed for berating authorities at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City on Wednesday.
In a report, Southern Police District (SPD) director Brig. Gen. Roderick Mariano said Jack Boo tried to bribe police officers at the Taguig City Police Substation 1 in BGC where the latter's companion, only identified as Chong, was detained at around 3:50 a.m.
Police seized from Boo the PHP30,000 bribe money. He would also be charged with violation of Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code, which pertains to the corruption of public officials.
Investigation showed that Chong was earlier arrested for disobedience to an agent or person in authority (Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code), resisting arrest, alarm and scandal, unjust vexation, and oral defamation.
The arresting female officers were on patrol duty when they accosted Chong outside a restaurant at The Fort Strip, along 5th Avenue in BGC.
Chong appeared to be drunk and was smoking in the parking area, which was designated as a no-smoking zone.
The officers told Chong and informed him about the no-smoking policy but instead of complying, he insulted them by attempting to bribe them to let him continue smoking.
A security guard of the restaurant intervened and urged the suspect to stop and return to the restaurant.
Subsequently, when the police officers approached the restaurant management, they were given a warning and reminded of their responsibility to inform customers about the no-smoking policy.
Chong became furious, went outside the restaurant and cursed at the responding police officers and the security guard, which resulted in his arrest. (PNA)
