Magnitude 5.6 quake hits Eastern Samar

MANILA – A magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted Eastern Samar Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In an advisory, Phivolcs said the tectonic quake struck at 2:50 p.m. at a depth of seven kilometers, about 76 kilometers north of Hernani town.

The quake was felt at Intensity V in the towns of Hernani and Llorente, while Intensity IV was felt in the municipalities of Gen. MacArthur, Balangkayan, Maydolong, Salcedo, as well as in Borongan City, all in Eastern Samar.

Intensity III was felt in the Quinapondan, San Julian, Sulat, Taft, Mercedes, Guiuan, Giporlos, Lawaan and Balangiga, Eastern Samar; and Tacloban City in Leyte.

Intensity II was felt in Can-avid, Dolores, Oras, San Policarpo; Palo, Tanauan, Dulag, Babatngon, San Miguel, Pastrana, Barugo, Carigara, Tabontabon and Julita, all in Leyte; as well as Basey and Santa Rita, Samar.

Phivolcs said no damage from the quake is expected, but warned of possible aftershocks. (PNA)
