St. Benilde stamps class on Arellano, rises to 2nd in NCAA basketball

MANILA – College of St. Benilde rolled to its fourth straight victory at the expense of Arellano University, 74-56, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 men's basketball tournament at Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Saturday.

Will Gozum finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks as the Generals clobbered the Chiefs to join the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in second place at 8-4, behind Mapua and Lyceum (9-3).

San Beda University is running third at 7-4, followed by Emilio Aguinaldo College (7-5), Perpetual Help (4-7) and San Sebastian College (4-8).

Letran is at the bottom with a 1-11 record.

“Will is playing better. We’re also solid defensively,” CSB coach Charles Tiu said after the game.

Miguel Oczon and Miguel Corteza chipped in 11 points each while Mark Sangco added eight points, 11 boards, six assists and two blocks.

Oczon also had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Corteza had five rebounds and one block.

Lorenz Capulong had 18 points, 12 rebounds, while Danielle Mallari added 11 points and two steals for Arellano, which absorbed its 10th loss against two wins. (PNA)
