MANILA – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. on Tuesday reiterated the police force's commitment to protecting all journalists and media practitioners in the wake of the killing of radio anchor Juan Jumalon, popularly known as Johnny Walker, in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
In a statement, Acorda said the PNP will continue to work tirelessly to create an environment in which journalists can fulfill their vital role in society without fear of violence or intimidation.
“We implore the community to join forces with us in our pursuit of justice for Juan Jumalon. Your cooperation and support are invaluable in solving this crime and ensuring the safety of our society,” he said.
Acorda said the PNP seeks to foster an open communication with media members to assist them and address their concerns regarding their personal safety.
“When the people are quiet about corruption, nothing good will come out. I consider the media as a vital partner of the PNP and under my leadership, we are focusing on their welfare. We want to have an open communication with the media so that if there is something that needs to be addressed, let us talk, sit down, and we can arrange for safety and security so that the truth and corrupt practices will continue to be revealed,” he added.
Acorda also extended his condolences to Jumalon's bereaved family.
He also announced the creation of the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Johnny Walker” which will conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation to bring about a speedy resolution to the case.
The PNP Regional Office 10 has also launched intensive manhunt operations to locate and apprehend the suspects involved in this brutal crime.
To aid the investigation, the PNP has released a computerized facial composite of one of the suspects and appeals to the public to come forward with any information that may assist in the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. (PNA)
