Flooding hits 2 Northern Mindanao cities, 2 injured

ILIGAN CITY – Flooding hit two Northern Mindanao cities after heavy rains in the past three days, resulting in two persons injured.

The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) 10 (Northern Mindanao) and the Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Wednesday identified the injured as Viena Obach, 62, and Sophia Domado Monir, 65, both of Barangay Mahayahay here.

Barangay Mahayahay is one of the nine villages in this city that have been inundated since Tuesday evening, based on the records of the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Office.

The OCD-10 reported that an initial 790 individuals from four barangays were sent to evacuation centers due to the floods.

Mayor Frederick Siao suspended school classes and visited evacuation centers.

"We initiated plans to check the integrity of public infrastructures, to ensure the safety of its use. We also plan to do dredging and desilting projects (in the rivers) to reduce the incidence of flooding," he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 10 said it has prepositioned a standby fund of PHP4.3 million for this city.

The CSWD said it has also prepositioned at least 43,567 family food packs, which also included 3,844 family kits, 3,758 hygiene kits, 3,249 kitchen kits, and 3,775 sleeping kits.

Meanwhile, in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, Mayor Lemuel Meyrick Acosta likewise suspended classes due to flooding since Monday.

As of Wednesday, most floodwaters in Oroquieta City's main thoroughfares had subsided. (PNA)
