MANILA – The three Filipino seafarers who were injured when their Liberian-flagged ship, Kmax Ruler, was attacked Wednesday by a Russian missile in Ukraine, are now safe and out of danger, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
In a statement on Thursday, DMW officer-in-charge Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the three seafarers were at the bridge of the ship, docked at the port of Pivdennyi near Odesa, when the missile hit the vessel.
“Thankfully, they were far enough from the point of impact and suffered non-fatal injuries. They are all out of danger,” Cacdac said.
He said the injured Filipinos were the captain, third mate and engine trainee.
Aside from the Filipino seafarers, a port employee was also injured.
The incident also resulted in one death.
The DMW has already instructed the seafarers’ manning agency as well as the ship owner to provide all necessary assistance to the injured crew.
The DMW also facilitated the communication between the seafarers’ families and their employers to keep them abreast of their conditions.
Ukraine said the civilian ship was entering the port in the Black Sea region of Odesa when it was hit by a Russian missile. (PNA)
