MANILA – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Saturday it has begun inspecting areas in Sarangani, Davao Occidental affected by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the municipality Friday afternoon.

In a statement, the department said post-earthquake assessment is being done on buildings, roads, and bridges.

“Inspection and assessment and installation of signages are ongoing, including conduct of post-earthquake assessment and continuous monitoring of other national roads and bridges,” it said.

At the same time, the DPWH reported that as of 6 a.m. Saturday, one road section in General Santos City was not passable due to a “bump” in the approach of the Buayan Bridge along the Buayan-Glan Road in Barangay Buayan.

It noted, however, that all national roads and bridges in other affected regions are passable to all types of vehicles.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani at about 4:14 p.m. Friday.

The tremor’s epicenter was monitored 30 km. south of Sarangani.

In an advisory issued at 4:20 p.m., Phivolcs reported the tremor’s magnitude at 7.2 but downgraded it to magnitude 6.8 at 5:36 p.m. (PNA)
