MANILA – Filipino International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon won the Open division title in the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship and earned his second Grandmaster (GM) norm on Friday.
The 19-year-old Quizon scored 7.5 points and was tied with Mongolian FM (FIDE Master) Munkhdalai Amilal, but he was declared the champion for having a better quotient.
Indonesian IM Aditya Bagus Arfan (7.0 pts) bagged the bronze medal in the tournament held at the Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu.
Quizon scored victories over Malaysian Brayden Carl Linus (1st round), Filipino Jan Clifford Labog (2nd), Indonesian CM (Candidate Master) Fabian Glen Mariano (3rd), Filipino FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca (5th), Indian Nirish Kumar Siva Kumar (6th), Filipino IM Michael Concio Jr. (8th) and Malaysian Muhd Faqih Aminuddin (9th).
He had a draw with Amilal (4th round) and lost to Arfan (7th).
"I am happy to have won the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship and I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament," said Quizon, who earned an outright IM title after winning the 2018 Eastern Asia Juniors in South Korea where he also secured his first GM norm.
The Dasmariñas City, Cavite-based woodpusher has an ELO rating of 2415 points. He needs 2500 points to become a GM and will try to achieve that goal at the 11th edition of the Kamatyas Invitational GM tournament scheduled from Dec. 9-17 at the Pande Amerikana, GM Eugene Torre Museum in General Ordoñez Street, Concepcion Dos, Marikina City.
