NDRRMC: Over 176K families so far affected in Surigao Del Sur quakes

MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday reported that families affected by the recent strong earthquakes that struck Surigao Del Sur have climbed to 176,618 families, significantly higher than the 162,946 families reported last December 8.

The figure is equivalent to 705,784 individuals in 382 barangays in Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga

Of this number, 726 families or 2,908 persons are being helped inside five evacuation centers while another 23 families are being aided outside.

The Office of Civil Defense earlier said the affected families include those displaced and those not needing transfer or removal from their residence.

The NDRRMC is still validating reports of three fatalities, while 86 persons were reported injured, of which 12 have been confirmed

A total of 5,635 houses were reported damaged in the three regions.

Meanwhile, damage to infrastructure in Davao Region and Caraga has reached PHP785.8 million.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur at 10:37 p.m. on December 2, with its epicenter recorded east of Hinatuan town.

At 3:49 a.m. December 4, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck north-northeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur. (PNA)
