MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday confirmed that two more stray bullet injuries (SBIs) were recorded in the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Cordillera region.

The case from the NCR was a 28-year-old man who suffered a fracture in the second toe of his left foot after it was hit by a stray bullet.

Meanwhile, the case from the Cordillera was a 60-year-old man who suffered a fracture in his left collar bone.

Close coordination is ongoing between the DOH and the Philippine National Police for all reports of SBIs.

Both have been included in the 28 new cases recorded from 6 a.m. on Jan. 3 to 5:59 a.m. on Jan. 4.

The age of the new cases ranged from 6 years to 62 years and 88 percent of them are male.

The majority of them, or 52 percent, were due to legal fireworks. Nine cases or 35 percent were hospitalized due to their injuries.

To date, there are 585 cases overall with 581 due to firecrackers, one Watusi ingestion, and three SBIs.

More than half or 311 cases were from the NCR; 58 from the Ilocos Region; 47 from Calabarzon; and 42 from Central Luzon.

The fireworks that caused 64 percent of the fireworks-related injuries were the kwitis, 5-star, whistle bomb, pla-pla, boga, luces, and fountain. (PNA)
