MANILA – A South Korean man wanted in his homeland for involvement in telecommunications fraud and drug trafficking is awaiting deportation, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Friday.

Commissioner Norman Tansingco said 43-year-old Sim Dongwoo would soon be deported after his arrest in Buenavista, Marinduque by operatives from the bureau’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) on Feb. 6.

“We will thus deport him immediately so he could face trial for the crimes he allegedly committed. He was already included in our blacklist and perpetually banned from re-entering the country,” he said in a statement.

Sim was the subject of a warrant of arrest issued by the BI chief, under a summary deportation order from the bureau's board of commissioners issued against him.

Sim was the subject of a red notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and was ordered arrested by the Seoul Central District Court in July 2021.

The foreigner was charged with fraud before the court for being a member of a voice phishing syndicate that defrauded its victims of more than 58 million won or around USD44,000.

Authorities also alleged that Sim and his accomplices were also involved in the smuggling of some 200 grams of methamphetamine drug 'Philopon' into South Korea from Manila in September last year.

The syndicate is suspected of having smuggled over 1 kg. of methamphetamine on five different occasions from August to December last year.

Sim is currently detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City. (PNA)
