CEBU CITY – The Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is expected to be operational by the middle of this year, a local official said Wednesday.

Councilor Jerry Guardo, chair of the city council’s infrastructure committee, said the Phase 1 of the BRT project that stretches from the Capitol building to the Cebu South Bus Terminal will become operational not later than June.

As compared to traditional jeepneys that can only accommodate 12 to 16 passengers, BRT, which will have a stretch of 18-meter-long buses, can accommodate 180 to 200 passengers.

“BRT is just one basket of solutions (to Cebu City traffic congestion). Other proponents were talking about a monorail with an alignment passing through the coastal villages and will have routes from Cebu City to the cities of Talisay, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu, as well as a special line connecting the Mactan Cebu International Airport," said Guardo.

In March, the project management will start the underground cabling operations along the BRT route, he added.

The completion of the project will be in time for the Palarong Pambansa in July.

“We’ll make sure that no debris and excavations will be visible during the Palarong Pambansa 2024 in July (2024),” he said.

Meanwhile, Guardo urged Cebuanos to support the BRT project, saying that it had gone through a tedious process before it was funded by the National Economic Development Authority and through the loan granted by the World Bank. (PNA)
