MANILA – The Diocese of Pasig has launched the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of catechist Laureana “Ka Luring” Franco.

In a Circular, Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara appealed to the Catholic faithful to participate and provide information to her cause.

“The Diocese of Pasig is proposing a candidate for Sainthood in the person of the Servant of God, Laurena "Ka Luring" Franco of Hagonoy, Taguig City,” he said.

“With this Circular Letter, I invite all the People of God in the Diocese of Pasig to participate in the tedious process of bringing to light the life and heroic virtues of a legendary catechist to Sainthood. I invite all the faithful to provide me with helpful information regarding the cause of Ka Luring," the Pasig prelate added.

Any information, whether personal or private, authenticated documents, can be communicated to the diocese’s chancellor, Father Joeffrey Brian Catuiran, at Tahanan ng Mabuting Pastol Sta. Clara de Montefalco Compound, C. Raymundo Avenue, Caniogan, Pasig City or through telephone number 02-8643-9325.

Vergara said an edict was published on Feb. 24, 2024, where Erickson Javier, Doctor of Ministry, was legitimately named Postulator of the Causes of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God.

Javier, he said, wrote him a letter asking to open the process for the beatification of Ka Luring.

“With the publication of the edict, herewith attached, is the start of our opening of the Process as required by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints,” he said.

Franco was born on July 4, 1936, the eldest among eight siblings. She died Oct. 17, 2011.

She joined the Legion of Mary as a devotee of the Blessed Mother and taught catechism to public school students.

She was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (For Church and Pope) from Saint John Paul II on April 1, 1990 for her exemplary service as a lay catechist, upon the recommendation of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin.

In 2002, she also received the Mother Teresa Award, which is given to individuals and organizations promoting peace, equality and social justice. (Ferdinand G. Patinio/PNA)
