CIDG nabs suspect in slay of Cotabato City public safety chief

MANILA – The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested one of the suspects in the murder of a retired policer who served as head of the Cotabato City Public Order and Safety Office.

In a statement on Friday, CIDG director Maj. Gen. Romeo Caramat said Orlan Ayunan, 31, was arrested in Barangay Bagua 1 on Wednesday night.

Ayunan is facing murder and frustrated murder charges before the Cotabato City Regional Trial Court Branch 13.

Caramat said Ayunan is one of the suspects in the killing of Col. Rolen Balquin (ret.) and wounding of his security escort in Barangay Rosary Heights on March 19, 2022.

Police also seized from the accused a caliber .45 pistol, magazine assembly and eight pieces of live ammunition.

Ayunan is listed No. 3 regional most wanted of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro and No. 7 most wanted person of the Cotabato City Police Office.

Ayunan and the confiscated pieces of evidence were brought to the CIDG Cotabato field office for documentation and proper disposition prior to the return of the warrant of arrest to the court of origin.

Suspended village chief nabbed

Also on Wednesday, CIDG agents arrested alias "Luis," 48, the suspended village chief of Barangay Sto. Niño, Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay for illegal possession of firearms.

"Si Luis ay ilang beses umanong inireport dahil sa gun-toting at pagmamayabang na pagpapakita ng kanyang mga baril. Dagdag pa, na noong Jan. 26, 2024 ay sinuspinde siya ng animnapung araw bilang barangay chairman dahil sa (Luis is said to have been a subject of several complaints for gun-toting and flaunting his firearms. Additionally, on Jan. 26, 2024, he was suspended for 60 days as barangay chairman due to) abuse of authority," Caramat said.

CIDG agents likewise seized various kinds of firearms, ammunition and a fragmentation grenade from the suspect's home.

He will face charges for violation of Republic Act No. 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and No. 9516 (Illegal Possession of Explosives) before the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Prosecutor's Office. (PNA)
