MOA inked to preserve mangrove forest in Agusan Norte town

BUTUAN CITY – The town of Tubay in Agusan del Norte has signed an agreement with Surigao Economic Development and Microfinance Foundation Inc. (SEDMFI) for the sustainable management of the mangrove forest in the area.

"Through a memorandum of agreement (MOA), the parties commit to working together to preserve and sustain the 15-hectare mangrove area in Poblacion 2," Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO-Tubay), -Tubay said in a statement on Tuesday.

The MOA, signed on Monday, will ensure the protection and preservation of the 15-hectare mangrove forest that covers the shorelines of Barangay Poblacion 2 in the municipality.

Signatories to the instrument were Tubay Mayor Jimmy Beray, CENRO-Tubay Officer-in-Charge Hernan Ramires, and SEDMFI lawyer Joseph Nacario. The agreement detailed programs and community engagement activities designed to ensure the preservation of the town's mangrove forest.

Before the MOA signing, the group, together with volunteers from various sectors in the town, conducted a mangrove planting activity in the area.

The volunteers included personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Municipal Police Station, the 2nd Agusan del Norte Provincial Mobile Force Company, the SEDMFI staff, and barangay officials and residents from Poblacion 2.

Among the major activities to be undertaken are the regular planting of mangrove propagules, clean-up drives, and regular monitoring activities within the mangrove forest areas. (PNA)
