ANTIPOLO CITY – Authorities here arrested two women who were attempting to smuggle in a substantial quantity of shabu inside a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) detention center.

Some 250 grams of shabu, with an estimated street value of PHP1.36 million, was being smuggled into the facility by the suspects, identified only as “Sally,” and “Kath,” who were purportedly visiting their detained live-in partners on Tuesday.

In an interview on Wednesday, city police chief Lt. Col. Ryan Manongdo said the large volume of shabu seized from the two women indicated that it was not merely for the personal use of their jailed lovers, but would have been trafficked to other inmates.

“The thought of so many detainees being high on drugs is really alarming. They would have presented a significant risk to jail guards and fellow detainees. We credit the seizure to the vigilance of those manning the detention facility,” Manongdo told the Philippine News Agency.

He said the suspects tried to smuggle two condoms filled with sealed plastic bags containing shabu past the jail guards when they were nabbed.

Investigators were not specific as to where the two shabu-filled condoms were being hidden by the two female drug "mules."

Meanwhile, Rizal Police Provincial Office director Col. Felipe Maraggun said the two suspects will be charged with the violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

He noted that the suspects were turned over to the Antipolo City Police Drug Enforcement Team by the BJMP personnel.

Maraggun said the seized evidence will be subjected to laboratory examination for confirmation that it is illegal drugs. (With a report from Miguel Gil/PNA)
