LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Health - Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) 5 (Bicol) has reminded the public to be cautious of their health and safety during the "Semana Santa" (Holy Week) observance and to reflect on what is good and beneficial for their well-being during their long work and school break.

In a media advisory on Friday, the health authority advised the public to practice health measures to prevent diseases and injury, including heat stroke or exhaustion, hypertension, drowning, and such diseases as sore eyes or conjunctivitis, cough and colds, skin diseases, and rabies.

To avoid heat stroke, DOH-5 advised limiting outdoor activities, drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and staying home for senior citizens or those with high blood pressure.

To manage hypertension or high blood pressure, it is recommended to maintain a healthy lifestyle by following a low-salt and low-fat diet, doing regular aerobic exercises, and avoiding smoking and alcohol.

"To reduce stress levels, practice relaxation techniques, and schedule heavy activities during cooler weather. If you feel exhausted, it is recommended to grab a glass of cool water immediately," the advisory added.

To prevent injuries, DOH-5 also advised safe driving habits, including the wearing of seatbelts and helmets and avoiding the use of distracting electronic devices.

When traveling, the public is advised to follow traffic rules, maintain a safe speed, show courtesy to other motorists, and call the emergency hotlines in case of any incident.

Also, to avoid drowning when going to the beach or resorts, adults are advised to not allow children to swim without company and to avoid swimming after taking alcoholic drinks.

"DOH-Bicol is one with the Christian community in observing the solemnity of Holy Week and emphasizes that this celebration can also be enjoyable if it is disease-free, worry-free, and stress-free throughout the season," the advisory read. (PNA)
