BUTUAN CITY – The construction of a PHP101.3-million seawall project is seen to fortify the coastal defenses and safeguard residents of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.

The Marihatag Seawall project, whose groundbreaking on Sunday afternoon was led by Surigao del Sur 1st district Rep. Romeo Momo, boasts a substantial span of 504.4 linear meters.

Once completed within 234 calendar days, Momo said the seawall will serve as “a formidable barrier against the relentless forces of nature,” providing crucial protection to the vulnerable coastal communities in the town.

“The project is a vital step towards safeguarding our coastal communities. With a commitment to environmental preservation and community protection, we're building resilience against the tides of tomorrow,” Momo said in a statement Monday.

Momo said the project signifies a proactive approach towards disaster risk reduction and management, underscoring the commitment of the local government unit (LGU) of Marihatag to prioritize the safety and well-being of its constituents.

It also marks a milestone in the collective efforts to enhance resilience and preparedness in the face of environmental challenges, he added.

In a separate statement on Monday, the LGU Marihatag said the project stands as a testament to its commitment to environmental protection, coastal resilience, and community safety.

“As we embark on this journey, we envision a future where our shores are safeguarded, our communities are resilient, and our environment thrives. Together, let us build a stronger, safer, and more sustainable future for generations to come,” the local government said. (PNA)
