MANILA – Authorities nabbed one of Eastern Visayas' top fugitives in a manhunt in Caloocan City, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said Thursday.

NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., in a report, said 20-year-old Gerald Togayong was apprehended by a team from the District Intelligence Division and District Special Operation Unit of the Northern Police District, together with PRO-8 operating units in the city's Barangay 55 on Wednesday.

Togayong, tagged as the No. 5 most wanted person of the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8), is wanted for rape by the Maasin City, Southern Leyte Regional Trial Court Branch 24 with no bail recommended.

Nartatez said the suspect is now under police custody and will be turned over to issuing courts.

Travel security

Meanwhile, police authorities ramped up security inspections in areas of public convergence to secure travelers for the Holy Week.

On Wednesday, Nartatez together with Quezon City Police District (QCPD) chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan led a comprehensive inspection of bus stations in the city.

The inspection aimed to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to facilitate smooth and secure travel for the public during this peak season, Nartatez said.

“I urge everyone to cooperate with authorities and follow safety guidelines as we anticipate the surge in travel this week and summer vacation. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can travel safely and enjoy a peaceful holiday season,” the NCRPO chief added.

The inspection covered various aspects including crowd management, security protocols, and compliance with transportation guidelines. (PNA)
