MANILA – Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Wednesday expressed hope that the celebration of Eid'l Fitr or the feast of Ramadan will promote understanding and forgiveness.

"As we enjoy this precious time we spend with those who are dear to us, may we also exchange forgiveness and understanding, beyond the gifts that we give our loved ones and friends," Teodoro said in his message for the occasion.

The defense chief also enjoined everyone to offer prayers for Muslims on duty during the occasion.

"May the Almighty Allah accept the deeds of worship offered to Him on this day of joy," he said.

The DND chief also urged the Muslim faithful to help the less fortunate during this festive season.

"May we also remember to give Zakat charitably to those who need it most. As the Quran says, 'Believe in Allah and his messenger, and give charity out of the (substance) that Allah has made you heirs of. For those of you who believe and give charity - for them is a great reward'," he added.

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) also joined Muslims in celebrating the occasion.

"This day marks the culmination of the Holy Month of Ramadan which is a time for prayer, deep reflection, and spiritual growth. May the lessons learned during this period continue to guide, inspire, and strengthen you throughout the year," OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said in a statement.

Galvez also hoped that the occasion would serve as an opportunity for Muslims to spend quality time with their families while thanking Allah for the blessings they have received.

Uphold virtues

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), meanwhile, expressed hope that the occasion would enable Muslim Filipinos to uphold discipline and devotion beyond Ramadan.

“Let this also be a time to commit to carrying on the virtues that Ramadan has reminded you to possess, such as willpower, compassion, patience, generosity, and gratitude,” DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said in a statement.

He also expressed hope that the teachings of Islam as a religion of peace would promote harmony in diversity towards a Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines).

The Philippine National Police (PNP) also extended its warmest greetings to the Muslim community for the festive occasion.

“We encourage everyone to celebrate Eid’l Fitr with respect, understanding, and unity, embracing the values of compassion, tolerance, and solidarity. Let us come together to promote harmony and goodwill in society,” PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said in a separate statement.

He also urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities to prevent any potential incidents.

“Together, let us uphold the spirit of Eid’l Fitr by fostering peace and unity among all members of our community. We wish everyone a joyous and peaceful Eid’l Fitr celebration,” Marbil added. (PNA)
