MANILA – Speaker Martin Romualdez on Tuesday called for the prompt and peaceful resolution to the recent seizure by Iranian authorities of a Portuguese-flagged container ship, which included four Filipino seafarers among its crew.

The MSC Aries was seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday morning near the Strait of Hormuz.

“In times of crisis, our foremost concern is the safety and security of our Filipino seafarers. We call for a peaceful resolution to swiftly resolve this distressing situation and ensure their prompt return home,” Romualdez said in a statement.

"The seizure of the MSC Aries deeply troubles us because it poses a potential threat to the safety of our Filipino seafarers. Ensuring their safety and well-being is the government’s utmost priority,” he added.

He said international collaboration is essential to navigate through this challenging situation.

“We must work together towards a peaceful resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved parties,” he said.

Iran’s state-run IRNA News Agency reported the seizure of MSC Aries by IRGC’s Special Naval Force near the Strait of Hormuz, alleging its connection to Israel.

The vessel's operator confirmed the seizure, and is currently collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safe return and well-being of its 25 crew members, including the four Filipinos. (PNA)
