MANILA – The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has reached out to employers of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Ehime and Kochi prefectures in Japan to ascertain their safety and conditions following a 6.6-magnitude earthquake.

“Migrant Workers Office-Osaka issued Advisory No. 04-2024 today, reminding Supervising Organizations and Principals to monitor the condition of OFWs in their jurisdictions and report any incidents involving Filipino workers that the earthquake may have caused,” the DMW said in a statement on Thursday.

At about 11:14 p.m. on Wednesday, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake shook a wide area of Western Japan.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake's epicenter was at the Bungo Suido channel, south of Osaka, at a depth of 50 kilometers.

The earthquake did not cause a tsunami, but tremors of magnitudes 1 to 4 were detected in the surrounding Shikoku, Kyushu, and Chugoku regions of southwest Honshu, Japan's main island.

Kyodo News reported that at least nine persons were injured as of late Wednesday.

The DMW said initial assessments indicate no reports of injuries or deaths involving OFWs.

However, MWOs in Tokyo and Osaka were advised to continue monitoring the situation and work closely with the Consulate General in Osaka and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo.

The DMW Head Office said it shall issue further updates as these develop. (PNA)
