TACLOBAN CITY – The Office of House Speaker Martin Romualdez has distributed cash assistance to athletes from this city and the first district of Leyte province who will compete in the upcoming Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet.

Accompanied by their parents, at least 530 athletes received the PHP5,000 assistance, coursed through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) assistance to individuals in crisis situations (AICS) program, at the People’s Center here.

Those living outside of the city got an additional PHP5,000 for the purchase of uniforms, shoes and other needs.

The eldest son of Romualdez, Andrew, witnessed the turnover of cash assistance.

“We commend the hard work of our athletes as they prepare for the regional sports event. Do your best to achieve your dream,” the young Romualdez, a polo sports player, said.

Grade 11 student Mark Kenneth Delos Reyes, a baseball player, thanked the Speaker for the assistance, saying it will be used for his daily needs while playing in Ormoc.

“We are poor and we cannot buy everything that I need for this game. I am very thankful for this help,” he added.

Delegates from different parts of the region have been arriving in Ormoc City, Leyte, for the 2024 EVRAA ahead of the May 5 opening.

EVRAA winners will represent the region in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa from July 11 to 15 in Cebu City. (With reports from Eljon Manzanes, OJT/PNA)
