MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has set a three-week registration period for political parties and sectoral groups in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) who would like to participate in the May 2025 regional polls.

In a social media post, the poll body, through Resolution 10984, scheduled the period to file a Petition for Registration or Accreditation of Regional Parliament Political Parties or Regional Parliament Sectoral Organizations from May 15 to June 7 this year.

"All parties, intending to participate in the Parliamentary Elections, must register with the Commission," it said. "All parties, organizations, or coalitions, intending to participate in the Parliamentary Sectoral Representation System, must be duly registered with the Commission.”

Under the Bangsamoro Electoral Code, the Parliament shall be composed of 80 members, with 50 percent (40) being regional political party representatives, 40 percent (32) as district representatives, and 10 percent (8) as sectoral representatives.

The Regional Parliament Political Parties are organizations composed of a group of citizens in the Bangsamoro based on the same ideology and common aspirations, while the Regional Parliament Sectoral Organizations are duly-accredited groups of people belonging to the non-Moro indigenous peoples, settler communities, women, youth, Ulama, and traditional leaders.

Meanwhile, those who are looking to run in the Bangsamoro polls have until Aug. 30, 2024 to file their Manifestation of Intent to Participate in the Parliamentary Elections, the Comelec said.

The first BARMM elections will be held in May 2025. (PNA)
