MANILA – The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has placed its Migrant Workers Offices (MWOs) in Taiwan on high alert after two magnitude 5.9 earthquakes rocked the island just minutes apart on Monday.

“There are no immediate reports of injuries among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), but MWOs in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung are reaching out to Filipino leaders, communities, employers, and trade associations to ascertain the status of OFWs,” the DMW said in an advisory late Monday.

The agency's MWOs, together with the Overseas Workers' Welfare Administration (OWWA) Offices are working with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), headed by chairperson Silvestre Bello III, in closely monitoring the situation.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) said the first quake struck at 5:45 p.m. with a depth of 15.6 kilometers, and seven minutes later, the second quake occurred at 5:52 p.m., at 16.1 kilometers deep. Both tremors struck south of Hualien County Hall.

Tremors have been rocking the island since the magnitude 7.2 earthquake on April 3, which also rocked Hualien County.

The DMW said that it will issue further updates as necessary. (PNA)
