MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has implemented a dress code adjustment for a limited time this month to provide some relief to its employees amid sweltering temperatures in the country.
In a memorandum released Wednesday, the bureau’s Administrative Division allowed employees to wear smart casual uniform on May 7 to 31, except on Mondays when a complete uniform is required.
Exempted from the directive are personnel under the civil security unit and those assigned at the international ports of entry and exit.
Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the move seeks to ensure the safety of its employees from intense heat.
The memorandum was issued as the country experiences scorching temperatures, with several areas being tagged by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as having "dangerous" heat index classification.
Earlier, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) allowed personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to wear light uniforms while on duty due to the extreme heat.
The Department of Education has also allowed learners and teachers to wear appropriate clothing during synchronous classes, subject to the dress code set by the Civil Service Commission.
Meanwhile, the BI chief urged residents of Baguio City and nearby areas to report any suspected illegal aliens to their intelligence team.
During the 'Bagong Immigration' service caravan in the country's summer capital on Wednesday, Tansingco underscored the crucial role of communities’ vigilance in maintaining border security and upholding immigration laws.
The caravan offers expedited processing for various BI transactions, including tourist visa extensions, exit clearances, dual citizenship applications, and other essential clearances. (PNA)
