LETTERS FROM DAVAO

Unlike earthquakes, fates of Yoly and Leni predictable

November 6, 2019, 11:50 am

THE earth seemed to have calmed in Mindanao and rescue and relief operations are in full blast. There is an unprecedented outpouring of support and compassion that flood the many places in Cotabato and Davao del Sur provinces hit by a series of devastating temblors. But amidst the uneasy calm comes the sad news that not a few remote communities not easily accessible to the urban centers likewise suffered so even badly and not a few have lost their homes which crumbled on the strength of magnitude 6.5 to 7 earthquake. A number have died and we grieve.

Davao City was not spared. The last, and hopefully the end was 6.5 magnitude and only one condominium unit, which obviously had structural deficiencies, partly collapsed but anyway had to be condemned. Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio had immediately organized a rescue, relief and rehabilitation center that was also tasked to receive, sort out, repack for immediate delivery to evacuation centers in several towns and cities in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur. Riding her big bike she personally had surveyed places where the earthquakes hit hard. She drove as far as Tulunan in North Cotabato which was the epicenter of the earthquake.

In the meantime influx of donations from Davao City residents and then elsewhere in the country poured in. Thank you, Mayor Vico Sotto and the government of Pasig, thank you Yorme Isko Moreno for your talent fee thank you China and thank you all.

Faceless individuals and groups responded to the call for assistance. It’s overwhelming. There were awe-inspiring acts of charity. Inmates in Surigao volunteered to cut their meager food subsidy by half so they can dispatch the half to quake victims. Movie actress Angel Locsin came to Davao City surreptitiously, did her own shopping for varied relief items the same way she did during the Marawi siege.

At this point let me let this out.

But amidst the tragedy and chaos where thousands lost their homes and are without food and water to drink it’s rather sad and utterly contemptuous that some characters wish us Mindanaons even worse than pain, misery, and fear that presently we have to endure. By the tone of her cuss, Yolanda Villanueva-Ong, a high profile advertising, and promotion executive wished us people from Mindanao be swallowed under the bowels of the earth. A failed actress and singer, Leah Navarro branded our sufferings from series of earthquakes and aftershocks a “retribution”. The political overtone in their despicable incantations is obvious. In the case of YVO, she is the media handler of VP Leni Robredo and was implicated by Advincula “alias Bikoy” in the ouster Duterte plot while Navarro is in the same league of YVO in demonizing Pres. Rodrigo Duterte.

Never mind Leah Navarro as she had always been a lightweight otherwise she could have been in the limelight of the arts just like the other Leah who is still shining so gently and bright. But Yoly Villanueva-Ong 9JVO)? Schooled in the best schools here and abroad, extremely educated and accomplished but deprived of any bit of compassion and spiritual values. She is consumed in politics even in the height of tragedy. When she was hit by a tsunami of emotional outbursts from people she cursed she did an act of contrition to us people of Mindanao but still so bitchy in her ‘plasticity’ because she did so only for those she distinguish from what she dubbed as DDS.

JVO’s name will forever be ensconced in the minds of Mindanaons. And because you were behind Campaigns & Grey who had been pushing for Leni Robredo and together salivate for the Presidency in 2022 one thing is certain: your bet will be buried in the magma of votes for whoever will be her adversary. Woe unto you a divine chameleon and to Robredo. Unlike earthquakes you and your penchant’s fates are predictable.
