TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite – The Cavite Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) on Monday reported zero casualty in the province in the aftermath of Typhoon Ompong, which lashed at most parts of the country over the weekend.
The PDRRMO attributed the zero fatality to residents in flood-prone and low-lying communities who heeded authorities for the pre-emptive evacuations before strong winds and heavy rains battered the province close to midnight Friday and Saturday morning.
Governor Jesus Crispin Remulla told Provincial Capitol officials and employees during Monday’s flag ceremony that typhoon damage in the province is minimal.
Earlier, he ordered the immediate release of funds for the relief goods that were distributed in the affected areas.
Remulla, along with younger brother and former Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla and Tanza local officials, led by Mayor Yuri Pacumio, also distributed relief goods to 769 individuals of Barangays Amaya 5, Amaya 7, Halayhay, Capipisa and Julugan 8.
He assured the provincial government’s budget allocation for families reeling from the damage wrought by Typhoon Ompong.
Both Cavite PDRRMO and the Provincial Public Safety Office’s coordination and monitoring with the six cities and 17 municipalities have no reported fatalities so far as pre-emptive evacuations were conducted in coastal towns and cities including highlands at risk for landslides and flash floods.
As of Saturday until Sunday, the pre-emptive evacuations recorded 185 residents in Noveleta; with Cavite City, 282; Naic, 5; Ternate, 5; Indang, 35; Rosario, 417; Kawit, 87; Bacoor City, 2068; Tanza, 769; and Carmona, 85.
As of press time, Bacoor City and Kawit DRRMOs are closely monitoring their flood-prone and coastal barangays. Noveleta PDRMs are monitoring Barangays San Rafael III and IV for their vulnerability to flooding as intermittent rains continue to drench town, Cavite City, Rosario, Tanza, Naic and Ternate.
Nanding Olimpo, chief of the General Trias CDRRMO also reported on Monday that around 379 residents were also relocated to their evacuation center on Saturday morning but have voluntarily returned to their respective homes as inclement weather dissipated in the afternoon.
In Noveleta, Mayor Dino Reyes Chua also led the municipal government in distributing relief goods to residents of coastal barangays of San Rafael III and IV.
Around 61 families in these barangays were displaced and assisted by the local DRRMO at the height of strong winds and heavy rains as “Ompong” hit the country, particularly Northern Luzon. (Dennis Abrina/PNA)
