Aklan tourism week to kick off Sept. 20

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- A weeklong celebration highlighting Aklan’s vibrant tourism industry will kick off Sept. 20.

Now on its sixth year, the Aklan Tourism Week is themed “sustainable tourism as a tool for development.”

This is in line with the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development this 2017, according to Hazel Reyes, tourism operations officer of the Aklan Provincial Tourism Office.

Reyes said incorporating “green” practices in tourism will be the highlight of the Tourism Congress to be spearheaded by the tourism office.

The tourism congress is scheduled on Thursday which will be attended by representatives from the tourism sector and the academe.

Aklanon products will likewise become the highlight of the weeklong trade fair dubbed Tinda Turismo at CityMall Kalibo.

The trade fair’s opening will coincide with the opening program for the weeklong celebration on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, outstanding personalities in the tourism sector will be recognized during the Dungog Awards Night on Thursday.

On Friday, senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will participate in a familiarization tour in some of Aklan’s tourism sites.

The tour will feature the Basura Garden in Balete; Pina Weaving center, Papierus arts and crafts; and Museo it Akean in Kalibo; Jumarap Farmers Hand Garden which produces organic products and the Talabahan Village in New Washington.

Other activities include the tourism quiz bee, flu and pneumonia vaccination, and the Color Wave Music Festival.

Aklanon talent will also be showcased in the activity dubbed Talento para sa Turismo while delicacies from Aklan will be highlighted in the Sabor Akean Cooking Challenge. (PNA)
