PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- The southern Palawan town of Bataraza registered the highest number of voters in the barangay level for the upcoming May 2018 elections based on the records of the provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Elections assistant Jomel Ordas of the local Comelec office said Monday afternoon that Bataraza has a total of 41,739 voters.

“Bataraza is leading among the municipalities based on the total number of registered voters,” he said.

Ordas said Palawan now has a total of 620,112 registered voters who will troop to voting precincts in May compared to 2016’s record of 583,057. The figure indicated an increase of 37,055 more registered voters.

He said that the increase in the figure is attributed to Republic Act No. 10952, which postponed and rescheduled the October 23, 2017, Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to the first Monday of May 2018.

Ordas said the postponement paved the way for the Comelec to conduct satellite registrations to cater to new voters, particularly those who turned 18 within the postponement period.

“The number of registered voters increased since there was a long period of registration in the barangays, especially because we were able to do satellite registrations,” he said.

Bataraza is followed by Taytay in northern Palawan with 41,338 voters, Narra with 39,443 voters, Roxas with 39,208 voters, and Brooke’s Point with 39,175. (PNA)
