Rondina, Gervacio beat US foes in beach volley World Tour

MANILA -- Cherry Ann Rodina and Angeline Marie Gervacio outplayed Americans Lindsey Fuller and Kaley Melville, 21-12, 21-16, in Pool D of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Manila Open main draw on Friday at the Sands SM By The Bay.

Rodina and Gervacio will next meet Spain's Paula Soria and Maria Belen Carro, who scored a 21-8, 21-9 victory over Simone Sittig and Lucina Pierangeli of South Africa.

Sittig and Pierangeli, on the other hand, will meet Fuller and Melville.

In Pool A, top seeds Erika Bobadilla and Michelle Amarilla of Paraguay defeated Jackielyn Estoquia and Dhannylaine Mae Demontano from the Philippines, 21-19, 21-13.

Bobadilla and Amarilla will take on Thailand's Thatsarida Singchuea and Pawarun Chanthawichai, while Estoquia and Demontano will battle Leonie Klinke and Lisa-Sophia Kotzan of Germany in their next matches.

Singchuea and Chanthawichai won over Klinke and Kotzan, 21-16, 21-17.

In Pool B, Japan's Takemi Nishibori and Ayumi Kusano clobbered Ma. Rosario Soriano and Ma. Beatriz Tan, 21-10, 21-9.

Nishibori and Kusano will next tackle Norway's Janne Pedersen and Hanne Zylstra, who prevailed over Canadian pair Megan Nagy and Caleigh Cruickshank, 28-30, 21-17, 15-12.

Soriano and Tan, on the other hand, will square off with Nagy and Cruickshank.

In Pool C, Katja Stam and Julie Wouters of the Netherlands prevailed over Lourdilyn Catubag and Karen Kay Quilario, 21-14, 21-11.

Stam and Wouters will battle Japan's Shinako Tanaka and Sakurako Fujii, who defeated Chinese Taipei's Ting Chi Yuen and Wai Yan Au Yeung, 21-15, 13-21, 15-9.

Meanwhile, Jade Becaldo and Calvin Sarte bowed to Sweden's Martin Appelgren and Simon Boman, 26-24, 21-23, 15-13, in Pool A of the men's division.

Becaldo and Sarte will take on Russian pair Petr Bakhnar and Taras Myskiv, who lost to Germany's Max-Jonas Karpa and Milan Sievers, 21-14, 18-21, 14-21.

The round-of-12 and quarterfinals are scheduled on Saturday with the semifinals and finals on Sunday.
